This article came out today, Changing of Symbol Meaning and it reminded me of a couple of years ago around this time that I was driving my parents to the airport. Every year for Pride (LGBT) Week, the hill by Sutro Tower is decorated with a Pink Triangle and my mother asked me about it – I explained that it was for LGBT Pride and that is came about because Hitler used it as a symbol to designated someone was gay in the concentration camps. It has now been “taken” by the LGBT community as a symbol of Pride.
This article explains that the swastika was pre-World War II was a symbol of good luck, but Hitler took it and made it a his own and therefore, made it a symbol associated with him and the horrendous events of World War II. In fact, in the Buddhist religion still uses the symbol and still consider it as good luck.
The other symbolism that is addressed is the color pink. “… Nazi’s use of pink to label gay and lesbian prisoners led pink to be stigmatized as effeminate and, thus, an inappropriate color for men…and over time it instead became the epitome of symbols of femininity.”
